Finding The Perfect Roommate(s)

on March 21st, 2013 in Roommates

So you need to find a roommate or two to live with while in college; good thing we here at College Student Apartments have developed a proven formula to help you select the perfect roommate(s). This formula has been through countless years of trial and error, and we've narrowed down the criteria to the following 6 principles: Similar Interests, Study Habits, Cleanliness, Boyfriend/Girlfriend, Other Friends, and Compatibility.

1. Similar Interests - You want to make sure you have some common ground with your roommate(s). This could be anything from sports, to movies, or even similar clothing styles. Without these common bonds to fall back on, it's harder to reduce conflict and increase friendship.

2. Study Habits - Don't forget we're here at college to get something called a diploma. So talk with your prospective roommate(s) about how they like to study. Do they prefer to go to the library and pull all nighters while jamming some tunes? Or do they like to study on the couch with absolute silence? Remember, everyone is different and this could be a big deciding factor if your roommate is home a lot and has to study in the kitchen.

3. Cleanliness - This is usually the biggest problem area for college roommates. I'm sure you've heard some horror stories about unclean roommates, so the best way we've found to avoid this problem is to go to your prospective roommate's current place and scope it out. Whether it's a dorm room or an apartment, you want to look for unclean dishes, clothes scattered, and anything else that may bug you when you finally start living together.

4. Boyfriend/Girlfriend - Many college students overlook the fact that their new roommates(s) may have a boyfriend or girlfriend. You might ask why this is such a big deal if they're in a relationship. It's because you basically have an unofficial roommate who will be over at your place all the time. Make sure to talk with their boyfriend or girlfriend to see if you get along before you sign that lease.

5. Other Friends - Most students don't think about your new roommate's other friends when making living decisions. This is also crucial in the process to make sure you like their friends because they'll be over at your place hanging out; if you don't them, it will make the living arrangement very awkward.

6. Compatibility - This last part of the equation is basically taking all the above five factors and weighing the pros against the cons. This can be the hardest part because, remember, there's no such thing as a perfect roommate. All you can do is evaluate the situation based on our formula and hope for the best!
