Skiplagged.com: The Way College Students Should Travel

by Stefani Lawless on July 07th, 2014 in Surviving College, College Trends, Guide To College Living

As mid-summer approaches, people are starting to realize they only have a month and a half left for their beach, Vegas or family vacation. The hotel is booked, and friends have agreed to go. Now, all one needs is travel. With a college budget, airfare is usually the most money hungry aspect of a vacation. Don't want to drain your wallet? Try out a new company called Skiplagged.com. The website is a search engine that uses the process of throw-away ticketing. This style of ticketing allows one to book airfare and save money by adding a connecting flight, oddly these flights can be cheaper.

Basically, the website allows you to purchase a heavily discounted airline ticket (sometimes up to 80% off), by getting off at the destination before the arriving city of the connecting flight. To simplify, you want to go to point 1 to point 2, but it is cheaper for you to buy a ticket from point 1 to point 2 to point 3.  So you buy the ticket from point 1 to point 3, but you get off and point 2. There are a few minor risks to take while using this process of traveling. First off, it is NOT illegal. Many think it is, to clarify again, it is not illegal. It is however against most airlines' policies, except for Southwest. This, in turn, gives a flyer the risk of losing airline points or status on an airline if getting caught not arriving in the city they are supposed to. Don't worry though because most of the time, this is not caught by the airline. If you are worried about your miles, do not login to your rewards account to book the flight. The worst case scenario: the airline cancels your ticket. A MUST KNOW that travelers using Skiplagged have to keep in mind, is that you cannot check bags! You can only have carry-on bags due to the fact that if they're checked, the bags will go to the final arrival city. There are ways around this, though: grabbing a bag from a store or kiosk in the airport and putting more belongings into that allows more space or just add another carry-on bag. With that being said, a trip to Denver from Dallas tomorrow on Skiplagged.com is 69 dollars. There is no airline that offers that low of a fee for a flight leaving tomorrow. Keeping the example of a flight from Dallas to Denver, the site then takes you directly to the airlines' website so you know the ticket is booked safely and securely. Happy travels and spend that extra cash you save on your flight on an extra marg on the beach!
