When you are in college, your life is centered around your apartment. You live there, sleep there, eat there, study there, do homework there, and sometimes even take classes or work remotely from there. You want your apartment to be a comfortable place. When you spend so long in a space, you also want it to reflect you and your aesthetic, personality, and needs.

And when you spend so long in a space, you can also start to get tired of the way that your apartment looks. Maybe your style has changed or the functionality of the space does not match your needs anymore. You would like to switch it up, but no one is more broke than the college student, so re-decorating your apartment does not sound like an affordable or feasible thing. Even getting the furniture and decorations you have in there to begin with was hard enough to come by. However, fear not! It is certainly still possible to do. Read on for some free, simple ways to switch up your apartment!

Feng-Shui

You may have heard of feng shui but may not know quite what it means. No, it is not simply rearranging your furniture. As Spruce explains, “The philosophy of feng shui is a practice of arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world. The goal is to harness energy forces and establish harmony between an individual and their environment.” This may sound like just what you need to switch up your apartment, but it may also seem easier said than done.

Sure, you want to “harness energy forces and establish harmony,” but how exactly do you do that? You can definitely look into feng shui principles and learn about positions, baguas, elements, and more. So as not to overwhelm yourself, it might be a good idea to identify one principle that really resounds with you and start there.

A particularly popular principle of feng shui is the commanding position, particularly in relation to the location of your bed. The placement of your bed is very important, way more important than you probably realized. For example, you do not want to place your bed in such a way that you cannot easily see the door from where you lay. You want your head to be pointed away from the door so that if someone comes in, you can see them right away. Not being able to clearly see or watch the door can actually discretely stress your body out, so not only can you switch things up by moving your bed around, you might also get a better night’s sleep.

Pick an Accent Color

Another strategy for switching up your apartment is to pick an accent color to help make your space pop.

There are many strategies for choosing what color to make your accent color. You could choose based on the meaning of different colors, or you could choose based on the warmth or coolness of the hues. You could even just choose a color based on how it makes you feel or if it is a favorite color or not. Choose items in that color that you have and display them prominently. Give items in that color positions of importance on your shelves, your counters, your tabletops, your bed, your couch, and more.

Pops of this color will draw your attention to new spaces and areas and can interact with the other items and furniture in your apartment in new ways. It can make the space feel fresher, newer, and imbue it with the vibe of whatever color it is that you choose.

 Re-Paint

Finally, another inexpensive strategy that you can try to switch up your apartment is to repaint your furniture. Not satisfied with your plain white, brown, black, or other basic colored furniture? Repaint them! Make them the color(s) of your choice.

Oftentimes college students have to take what they can get. This can mean that the furniture in their apartment is a hodgepodge of different furniture, in different styles, colors, and materials. You might not even like the furniture you have and use it out of necessity and functionality.

To reclaim this furniture, repaint it! If you like the natural wood color, you can re-stain it to either change the timber of the wood or make the wood look fresher. If you want bright and poppy colors, you can do that and make your furniture look fun. You can keep it simple and classic, painting the furniture all white or all black instead. Make it yours!

Hopefully, these tips will help you to switch up your apartment to make it a more comfortable and happy place for you to reside.
