Moving into an apartment after living in the dorms is a huge step. You have more independence, but you also have more responsibilities. Your apartment likely has more space and you are able to add more décor items. Also, you will be responsible for things like cleaning. You have to bring more stuff that you need, so make sure you know what is essential to have with you for the new semester.

Cleaning essentials

Moving into an apartment means you will have to have cleaning supplies on hand. It is likely that you never had to buy these things, so knowing what to get is crucial. For starters, be sure you have a vacuum, mop, soaps, a toilet want, washcloths, trash can and trash bags, and paper towels. Having these things on hand when a spill occurs will be useful. You may even decide to have extras on hand just in case. Cleaning items are not as fun as personal décor items, but they are essential for keeping your space clean, safe, and healthy.

Décor items

Décor items are some of the most fun things you can buy for your apartment. Your apartment is your home during the semester, so it is important that you make it feel personal. Whether you buy these items, make them yourself, or commission artwork from a friend or classmate, having unique pieces in your apartment will allow you to show off your personality. If you live with a roommate or two, work together to see how you would like to decorate your communal spaces. Be sure to check with your landlord to see if there are any restrictions, such as using nails or painting the walls.

Kitchen appliances

While your apartment may have things like a dishwasher, oven, and refrigerator, you may need to supply smaller appliances. Think about what you like to have in the morning. Do you wake up needing access to a coffee maker, teapot, or a toaster? Make sure you have these appliances available right off the bat so you can enjoy your favorite morning routines. These items often come in different colors, so you may be able to buy them in styles that match your décor or theme.

Furniture

Some apartments may come already furnished, but most do not. You will have to buy things like a bed, desk, tables, a couch, and other essentials you need for making your space functional for you and potential guests. This is different from a dorm, where you were given furniture already. Having designated space for different things can help ensure that you do not have to use your dining room or bed for doing schoolwork and you can step away to take breaks as needed.

Toiletries

When you move to an off-campus apartment, you may not have access to a 24/7 store that sells toiletries that you need. It is important that you have things like toilet paper, face wash, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and other bathroom essentials that you need. You will also want a way to store these items, especially if you are sharing a bathroom and you have your own supplies.

Bedroom accessories

While you may remember to bring clothes and a bed, you will need other things for your bedroom. Be sure to have hangers so that you can hang up clothes. Bring a mattress pad for your bed so you can sleep more comfortably. Bring a few sets of sheets, pillows, and extra blankets. This way, you can be sure you are nice and warm as you sleep. If you need noise to sleep, be sure to have music speakers or a white noise machine.

Weather necessities

If you go to school where it is hot and your apartment runs warm, be sure to bring a small fan to cool off. Check with your landlord to see if you are responsible for shoveling when it snows. If you are, be sure you and your roommates have a couple of shovels handy just in case. Have a rubber mat at the front door so people do not track in mud or dirt when it is raining or snowing out. Put a coat hanger near the front door so people have a place to hang their jackets without making puddles all over your apartment.

Basic tools

While your landlord is responsible for major repairs, having a basic toolkit and knowledge on how to use them can help you make small amends, even as you wait for the larger repair. Be sure to keep a measuring tape, screwdriver, hammer, and nails in your toolbox. Having a wrench is helpful if you have a bike that you need to fix. Your toolbox should also have a flashlight, duct tape, and pliers to use in case of emergency. If you are unsure as to how to use these tools, be sure to find out before you move into your space.

Moving into an apartment can seem overwhelming, but bringing what you need can help ease some of your nerves.
