Cooking Tips When Living in College Apartments

on July 31st, 2013 in Apartments

As college students get excited about being in a new world of freedom, they often find themselves eating unhealthy foods and feeling lost in the kitchen. There’s a lot of things that students learn throughout college other than studying and partying. Cooking is one of those skills that every college student must learn as they adjust to the real world. We’re going to lay out a few key foods and pieces of advice that every college student should know when learning to handle a kitchen.

One of the most important things to do when you move into apartments for college students is to establish house rules for sharing food. Students come from all different backgrounds ranging from large to small families. Some people are accustomed to sharing all food, but others are used to eating only the food meant for them. It is crucial to determine house rules for food in order to avoid conflict later on. Having a shelf for each roommate is often a good option. Remember that you are sharing a kitchen and to be respectful of your roommate’s boundaries.college grocery shopping

As you can see in the picture above, some students have no idea what to do when they get to the grocery store! When it comes to food shopping, there are a few foods that are always good to have stocked in your kitchen. Rice, pasta, and potatoes are all foods that keep for a long time and allow you to make a wide variety of meals. Canned and frozen vegetables are always a good option to ensure that you are getting the nutrients you need. Eggs have a lot of protein and can be made many different ways. It’s also good to stock up on nonperishable items when they’re on sale.

When it comes to actually making your meals, remember that just because you’re cooking for one, doesn’t mean that you should cut down the recipe. Make the entire recipe and save it for leftovers. This makes it easier to eat healthy with a busy schedule.

The last (very important) piece of advice is to remember to clean your fridge! Many students living in college town apartments forget to clean out their refrigerator regularly and end up with a stinky fridge with rotten food. Remember that learning to cook is part of the college experience, but in a matter of no time, you’ll get the hang of it.
