Purdue University is in West Lafayette, Indiana, and is known as Indiana's land grant university. It is one of the top public universities in the United States and is home to more than 200 undergraduate majors. While many students decide to live in housing on campus, others decide that they want to move off-campus. This is a big transition, but with the right information, the move can be simple.
Neighborhoods
Choosing a neighborhood to live in is a crucial step in figuring out the best off-campus Purdue housing options. The areas directly off-campus do not have specific neighborhood names, but there are a variety of apartments surrounding Purdue that are considered off-campus. There are plenty of off-campus apartments for students located north of Stadium Avenue. This area is great for those looking to get into Greek life or who love the parties that are often associated with this.
There are also a variety of off-campus housing options to the east of campus, specifically east of Grant Street. Like the area to the north of campus, this area also has some Greek housing. It also has a big cluster of restaurants and shopping options. Student apartments nearby include Granite Student Living, Westridge Pointe Apartments, and Waterfront Apartments. For those who choose this area, Levee Laundry, a laundromat, is located here for those who do not have access to laundry services in their apartments.
The areas to the south and west of campus do not have options for off-campus apartments. However, the area to the west has student dorms. For students willing to live a little further away from campus, Lafayette is located across the Wabash River from Purdue University. Students who decide to live here have access to public transportation and a variety of shops and restaurants.
Other nearby towns to check out include Dayton, Brookston, Colfax, Thorntown, and Wheatfield. These towns may not have access to public transportation, so these are ideal options for students who have access to a car while attending Purdue. These towns are also smaller than the city of Lafayette and West Lafayette, so they are great options for grad students who may want something quiet.
Dining
For Purdue students who want something quick that they cannot get anywhere else, AJ's is a student favorite. They offer different styles of burgers and hotdogs as well as Chicago-style beef.
Two Fellas is another Purdue staple. It started in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and now has a restaurant near Purdue.
Other restaurants that are unique to Purdue's campus and off-campus areas include Triple XXX, Nine Irish Brothers, Little Momma, the Pint, and the Tap. There are also chain restaurants, including Taco Bell, Chipotle, Panera Bread, Wendy's, and Moe's.
Transportation
Getting around is the main concern of students living off-campus. Purdue students can access Lafayette and West Lafayette's CityBus service for free with a valid Purdue ID. This is valid on the Campus Loop as well as regular routes.
Students are also allowed to bike to and on campus. There are bike paths and racks for parking bikes around campus. However, there are rules in place to help keep bike riders and other students safe. Bike riders must stop at stop signs and are not allowed to ride on the sidewalks. Bicyclists are also not allowed to ride their bikes wearing headphones in both ears.
Parking
For Purdue students who are driving to campus from their off campus living space, finding parking can be a tough thing to navigate. Purdue students who are planning on having a vehicle with them on campus need to purchase a parking permit. There are a variety of permits available depending on where the student lives. Purdue's campus has many parking lots and garages for parking on-campus. Students are encouraged to plan and arrive early to ensure they can find a parking spot before class.
Safety
Safety is a huge concern for all students, but it is even more crucial for students who live off-campus to have the information they need to stay safe and to be aware of incidents that are happening on and around Purdue University's campus. One of the major ways for students to remain informed is to sign up for Purdue Alert text messages. Students can also follow Purdue Emergency on Twitter for updates on emergency information.
Purdue has a Purdue Student Safety Patrol that offers walking escort services for students between campus buildings 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students wishing to utilize this service should call 494-SAFE (7233).
