Neighborhoods
Living in a dorm during your freshman year is a great experience, but most sophomore students choose to move off-campus. There are plenty of apartment options for off-campus housing.
The typical off-campus housing at Temple University ranges from two to six bedrooms, so you can usually count on always having our own room. There is a variety of apartments to choose from, including newly constructed units with high-tech features and modern appliances. It's important to note that there are only a couple of apartment complexes, such as The View, The View II, and The Edge, in the area, as most students will rent a Philadelphia apartment unit in a renovated row home, which line most of the residential streets of Philadelphia.
Most students moving off-campus stay just a few blocks from the edge of campus. A popular area is west of Broad Street to 18th Street and from Susquehanna Avenue south to Master Street. Although, there has been more development east of campus.
Students also have the option to move to another part of the city such as Fishtown or South Philly. Both of these neighborhoods are easily accessible to and from campus thanks to the Broad Street and Market Frankford Lines.
Dining
There are a handful of places to eat on campus, but you'll find much more variety off-campus. While most of these restaurants are not sit-down places where you will be served, you'll never be without delicious and affordable food.
Whatever you are craving, you'll be able to find it on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. From pizza to sandwiches from Lee's Hoagies to Chinese food from Maple Star and sushi, just walk down Cecil and you'll be able to satisfy that craving in no time. You'll also find fast food places along Broad Street for a quick bite or a late-night snack.
For brunch, Champs Diner is the go-to place on Saturdays and Sundays. While you should prepare to wait a bit, the food is worth it.
There are two college bars that are extremely popular amongst Temple University students and they are both located on Cecil B. Moore. The Draught Horse not only has great bar food (and is one of the few sit-down style restaurants off-campus) but they are also known for their Wednesday night specials.
Pub Webb is the other popular bar that students will frequent. It's a little smaller but is a great place to order hot wings. Transportation
Temple University is perfectly placed for public transportation in Philadelphia. When you live in off-campus housing, you'll be no more than a 15-minute walk from either the Cecil B. Moore or Susquehanna-Dauphin stop on the Broad Street Line. This line takes you north and south on Broad Street and will bring you to City Hall (the middle of Center City) in just 10 minutes. From here, you can get a free transfer to the Market-Frankford Line, which runs east to west in Philadelphia. There are also a few buses that run along the numbered streets, which makes it convenient to get to other parts of the city that the subway does not reach. If you are leaving the city, there is the Regional Rail train station at Berks and 10th Streets. This will take you into the surrounding suburbs, Trenton, New Jersey area, and the Wilmington, Delaware area.
Parking
There is plenty of street parking available if you choose to have a car. Most of it is free except for the few side streets that require you to have a permit. If you live on one of these side streets, you can apply for a parking permit with the city for about $35 per year. There are even some properties that include a parking space, but it isn't very common. However, there is the Montgomery Parking Garage where you can buy a parking pass. Due to the high price, though, most students choose to park their cars on the street.
Safety
While crime rates are higher in the Temple University area than other parts of the city, the university offers students who live on and off-campus extra security resources. One of these resources is a walking escort. You can call a number while on campus at night and one of the security personnel will walk with you to your apartment. There is also the Owl Loop, a small bus that will take you from campus back to your apartment during night hours. If walking off-campus, you will always see security personnel riding their bikes around the neighborhood as well as both Philadelphia Police and Temple University Police parked on the corner of streets.
Living in a major city means you must be careful and always aware of your surroundings. While living off-campus at Temple University, it's important to be smart about your situation. Make sure that your doors are always locked and don't walk around late at night by yourself. Take advantage of the security resources offered to you; they're worth it.
Shopping
One of the best features of living in an apartment is having a kitchen to cook in. The major grocery store in the area is The Fresh Grocer at the corner of Oxford and Broad Streets. However, if you just need one or two items, there are plenty of little corner grocery stores located throughout the neighborhood.
The best place for retail shopping is right in Center City along Walnut and Chestnut Streets. Here you can find stores like H&M, Express, GAP, Banana Republic, and the Liberty Two Shopping Center. With Temple University being right in the city, you have endless shopping options just a couple of miles away.
