Chattanooga often gets overlooked by larger Tennessee cities like Nashville and Memphis, but UTC students know that the city is full of its own charms. A variety of neighborhoods offer students wanting to live off-campus a selection of amazing options. Dining and entertainment will keep students living their best college lives.
Neighborhoods
When it comes to off-campus housing in Chattanooga, there are plenty of options for UTC students. The Tomorrow Building is located between UTC campus and downtown which is an ideal location. Being recently renovated, students will enjoy the atmosphere of urban living. For those students looking to live within the downtown area, the 300 Building is another great option. While a little on the older side, it offers convenient travel to downtown attractions. Off-campus UTC housing doesn't have to be exclusive to the downtown area, as the Central Flats are located in the Fortwood Historic District and are an amazing choice for students. With easy access to campus and pedestrian-friendly walkways, they have all the benefits a student could want.
Other neighborhoods that students may want to look into are North Shore, Riverview, and Southside. North Shore is a popular neighborhood that can be accessed via the Walnut Street Bridge. It is filled with small shops and boutiques that students will enjoy browsing, alongside Coolidge Park. Riverview, situated just east of North Shore, boasts some local eateries as well as its own park, aptly named Riverview Park. Lastly, the Southside Historic District is packed with historic gems and unique spots to visit.
Dining
Chattanooga has no shortage of options for students to try out. Many of these are located downtown which is great news for students living near campus. In fact, in the downtown area, not far from the UTC campus, students can venture down Main or Broad street and uncover places like Puckett's and Hair on the Dog Pub. In the Southside Historic District, The Chattanooga Choo Choo is a popular establishment built out of an old railroad terminal.. Similarly, Market Food Hall is a great choice for trying out a bunch of different foods. In North Shore, students may want to stop by Taco Mamacita or Brewhaus. Some other restaurants that UTC students love are Syrup and Eggs, which is a breakfast/brunch spot in the Dwell Hotel.
Transportation
When students need to get to UTC's campus, there are several ways to do so. To park on campus, which is a popular choice for UTC students living off-campus, students need a campus parking permit. In partnership with CARTA (Chattanooga's public transit provider), the Mocs Express gets you around campus and to perimeter parking for free. This is a great option for students who have to park further away from campus or have classes in distant building.
Additionally, a validated UTC ID card gains you unlimited free access to downtown, Hamilton Place, and every other CARTA route.
Chattanooga's Downtown area is very walkable and easy to get around. If you don't feel like walking the entire Downtown or have parked somewhere else, there is a free electric shuttle that covers all of the Downtown areas and to the North Shore. Similarly, Chattanooga has a thirteen-mile long riverwalk and one of the longest pedestrian bridges for its citizens to enjoy. If walking isn't your thing, try biking! Chattanooga has a citywide bike share system with over 300 bikes. This could be a great way to cut down on gas costs while getting around the city and campus easily.
Safety
UTC campus has several measures it takes to keep its students safe. There are Emergency Blue Lights located around campus that students can press and be immediately connected with a police officer. Additionally, the UTC campus police offer an escort service on weekends and nights for students that have safety concerns. This is extended to students who live off-campus.
Shopping and Entertainment
When it comes to shopping and entertainment for UTC students, Chattanooga doesn't fall short. From shopping malls to unique boutiques, the city has it all.
For students looking to shop, Hamilton place is a large shopping mall that offers a variety of options and styles. For more trendy and specialty shops, check out Frazier Avenue in the North Shore area or some of the shops inside Warehouse row. There are also quite a few renovated galleries, shops, and restaurants in the Southside area of the city.
A unique opportunity for students that love to cook or who are just looking for a cool experience would be the Chattanooga market which has hundreds of vendors from spring to fall. This outdoor market has even been called one of the top public markets in America.
Students that are of drinking age may be interested in having some drinks at some popular student hangouts like The Bitter Alibi, Tupelo Honey Café, Honest Pint, Jefferson's, and Matilda Midnight. Additionally, students can seek out their own entertainment in the popular areas of Downtown, North Shore, and South Side.
