    University of North Carolina at Charlotte Off-Campus Housing Guide

    Charlotte, North Carolina is one of the state's most vibrant cities and it is the largest city in North Carolina. It is no surprise that a renowned university, University of North Carolina – Charlotte, has a campus located in Charlotte. Because of its location, it can offer a wide variety of opportunities to its students, from top academics to opportunities to explore the city and the careers they can find there.

    Neighborhoods

    The campus of University of North Carolina – Charlotte (UNCC) is considered University City. There is also a neighborhood called University City North, which is located off-campus but still nearby. These neighborhoods have a variety of apartment complexes for students looking for off-campus housing near UNC Charlotte. Some of the more popular apartment complexes in and around University City include:

    Thornberry Apartments is an apartment complex in University City North that has variety of features that caters to student's needs. They allow pets, though there is a one-time pet fee. There are a variety of floor plans available and rent depends on how many rooms students need and the floorplan they decide on.

    University Place, which is located off campus, features a variety of shops and restaurants for UNCC students.

    Arcadia Student Living, which is located on Sanctuary Place in University Place, features in-unit washers and dryers, as well as a variety of other amenities for their tenants.

    Walden Court Apartments, Colonial Grand at University Center, and The Vinoy at Innovation Park Apartments are in University Place too. These apartments allow up to two pets, but there is a fee and additional cost.

    Other nearby neighborhoods including:

    College Downs is off campus but is still close. It is home to a variety of apartment complexes, including Heather Ridge, Aspen Charlotte, the Piedmont at Ivy Meadow Apartments, and Colonial Village at Chancellor Park.

    Mineral Springs/Rumble Road is another neighborhood near campus. It features apartment complexes such as Somerset Apartments, the Grayson Apartment Homes, and Autumn Park Apartments.

    Concord, North Carolina is about 20 minutes away from UNC Charlotte. There are a variety of stores, restaurants, and services, making it a great place to move if you are looking to live off-campus. Other nearby towns that students live in include Mount Holly, Indian Trail, Matthews, and Huntersville.

    Dining

    With UNCC being in Charlotte, there are a wide variety of dining options. Picasso's Sports Café is one of the city's most popular sports bars and their wings were voted the best wings in Charlotte. Students as well as faculty and staff with a valid ID get a 25% discount.

    The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium is a popular bar and tavern. They have locations around the country, but their Charlotte location is right off campus. They have a variety of beers and draughts for those who are old enough to drink. They also have a variety of food options for everyone.

    Like many colleges and universities, UNC Charlotte has a huge variety of food trucks around campus for a quick bite to eat between classes and other student events. For students who like seafood, Harbor Inn Seafood Restaurant is located near campus. There are also a ton of pizza places near campus, including Da Vinci Pizza. Students craving something familiar can opt for one of the many restaurant chains on campus, including Chick-Fil-A, Subway, Starbucks, and Wendy's.

    Like any city, Charlotte has many different ethnic food choices. Passage to India is a restaurant that serves Indian cuisine and Nakato Restaurant and Sushi Bar is a hibachi grill that serves Japanese food and sushi. River Buffet and Grill is a buffet with a variety of sushi and hibachi food. Other ethnic restaurants include Pho Real Vietnamese Restaurant, China Palace, and Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant.

    Transportation

    For students who live off-campus in places such as Arcadia Student Living, there is a campus shuttle. There are multiple routes depending on where you are and where you need to go.

    Students who live off-campus, in areas that do not have access to the transportation services on campus or within the city of Charlotte, have the option to drive to campus.

    Charlotte's LYNX Blue Line is a rail line that connects I-485 at South Boulevard to the UNC Charlotte campus. This makes it super convenient for students who want to go into Charlotte.

    For students who want to take the bus into the city, the city's Tyron bus line stops at Walmart University Pointe, which is on the edge of campus. There is also a UNC Charlotte/JW Clay line that connects to campus. Other lines that connect to campus include URP/CIC and University Research Park. Other bus schedules can be found on the bus website.

    The UNCC campus is also near the JW Clay station and the Tryon Street bus stop, so these stops can connect students to the rest of Charlotte.

    Parking

    Those who wish to have their vehicle on campus need to have a UNC Charlotte parking pass. There are a variety of parking options near the center of campus as well as further away. Those who do not have a permit are required to pay the fare. The campus has several parking garages and parking lots. Students and visitors are advised to have a copy of the parking map in case their first option for parking is not available. There are also apps and websites that show where parking is available in real-time so you can plan ahead.

    Safety

    The University of North Carolina Charlotte has several measures in place to keep students safe. Students are encouraged to sign up for safety alerts so they can be informed about what is going on. The campus police publish a daily log of police activity so students can be informed on what is happening on campus.

    There are sirens that go off to let students, faculty, and staff know about emergencies on campus. The sirens are located at Atkins Library, behind the Police and Public Safety/ Facilities Management building, and in the wooded area in between the EPIC building and Grigg Hall. After the sirens sound, they say information about how everyone should proceed in an emergency situation.

    Students who have given their cell phone to the University for texting purposes will be alerted via text message of any campus alerts. Alerts will also be sent out to University email addresses.

    The LiveSafe app is available for students to download. It allows students to contact campus and city police when they are in an emergency. For students who walk alone a lot, there is a Safe Walk feature where the student can link up where they are walking to and then have friends or family members track them temporarily while they walk to their destination.

    Shopping

    For students, there is no shortage of stores around campus.

    Harris Teeter is a grocery store chain with a store on University City Boulevard in the Town Center Plaza shopping center. They have a discount for college students where you receive a percentage off your order when you show your VIC Card. Students should visit the customer service desk to get set up to receive their discount.

    Target offers both groceries and clothes. They also sell college apartment essentials such as bedding and accessories. If you set up a college student registry online, students can get 15% off their purchase of items.

    The Commons at Chancellor Park is made up of Patel Brothers grocery store, Gabe's, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, and a few other stores and there is even a Game Stop near the Tryon Street bus stop.
